The BadwaterUltra.com site has a fantastic collection of stories from the Badwater Ultramarathon. 135 miles, 13,000 feet in elevation gain, billed as the most demanding and extreme running race offered anywhere on the planet.
...At Stovepipe, we spent 90-minutes to shower, repair blisters, and drink chicken broth. Mike, in his first ever attempt at blister treatment/taping, did a mean job! It was well worth the time spent, as we did not need to tend to blisters again during the remaining 93-miles! Marching up the lower half of Townes Pass was a grind. The air was hot and the sets of red eyes ahead of me seemed to be ascending straight up, as though on an escalator. Around 1:20 AM, I felt groggy and was allowed a 15-minute nap in the front seat of the van...

The EventRate.comsite has a great story from the 2003 Badwater Ultramarathon here:

...Down and through the valley of ‘the moving rocks’, the temperatures had peaked again and the crew was worried about the time it was taking to get through the race.
I tried to pick up my pace running towards the next checkpoint at Panamint Springs. Runners who had now pulled out were passing by with their crews shouting lots of encouragement, including the other UK entrant Wayne Simpson who had suffered severe dehydration. Wayne had tried to get back on the course three times, but eventually succumbed to the heat. They put six bags of IV in him at the hospital...
