The DirtWorld.com site has some great "live" coverage of the 2004 Continental Divide Race, arguably the world's longest mountain bike race. It's written as a travelog / diary, and the entries make for some compelling reading:

...I could not have ridden too far last night. Today was brutal. I didn’t sleep well as a rain storm with high winds moved through overnight. I let the road dry out until 8am before heading out. By then, it was already hot. The winds cranked and the sun banked. The only highlight was seeing several packs of wild mustangs up close...

The Mtbr.com site has a nice series of articles on the Great Divide Race 2004, including photographs. The articles are arranged as daily coverage, diary-style, and there are also articles describing the record-setting finish:

...I just got into Silverthorn. Yesterday I ended up riding until 12:15am so I was on the bike for 22 1/2 hours. After I set up camp, I fell asleep instantly then I heard something around my head. I looked around, saw nothing and went back to sleep. This went on over and over for about 10 minutes. Finally, I pulled my light out and my shoe on the other hand. I then saw a mouse eating at my camelback...
