Silly Rabbits make it thru TA3

Silly Rabbits make it thru TA3

It’s day three and Andy can only get one ear up!

Image

Team Silly Rabbits came into TA3 in high spirits. We were happy to see smiles on their faces and a little pick up in their step to our transition area. This was a good sign for them. Many of the other teams who came in before them looked tired and were moving slow. It showed the Rabbits have been playing it smart. They took 3 short sleeps out on the course and made some good nav decisions to make up minutes on the competition. They seem to be settling in to their pace for this race and getting used to racing 24/7.

Image

The Rabbits also ate very well, which is another good sign they are feeling good. It’s very difficult to keep your digestive system functioning normal in these races, and important to get nutrients, fiber and calories into their bodies early in an expedition length race b/c everybody’s bodies start to reject food, so the more we can get in now, the better they will be fueled later. They each ate a big bowl of raviolis with tomato sauce and homemade fruit bread (with hidden bran that Andy’s Mom made—our secret digestive weapon!) with loads of butter, some Gatorade and soda. And off to bed they went…

Image

Image

Image

Image

While they were sleeping, Team Silly Bunnies (the crew) had some time to be silly. As our buddies, Carl, the TA captain, slept, we crept up to him and ‘bunnied’ him. He didn’t feel the ears on his head and when he woke up minutes later, walked around with those ears on his head doing his official TA work with a pair of pink ears on his head. It was all we could do not to laugh, especially when Team Silva Sweden came up to sign out and they were giving him funny looks…but he eventually noticed them and took them off with a giggle. Watch out, you could be the next unsuspecting soul to be “Bunnied”!

Image

Image

The team awoke ‘naturally’…actually we used our hand cranked blender as an alarm. That thing is louder than a generator, but makes great tasting smoothies even where you have no electricity. It’s always better if the team wakes up on their own…we were just helping that process with a little environmental noise. So when two of them heard the sound and emerged for a pee, we told them, “Time to get up! Breakfast is ready.” The smell of eggs and French toast with maple syrup lured them to stay outside. Jason asked, “Has it been 3 hours already?” Well, actually it hadn’t, but the crew made an executive decision that if the team wanted to move up the rankings, 3 hours was too long of a sleep and they were missing a much needed hour of daylight.

Image

Our goal was to get them out in 2 hours, but make them think they had 3 hours of sleep. Diabolical, we know…sneaky Bunny crew. So when Jason asked, we said, “Yes, 3 hours. You went to sleep at 4am” They really went to sleep at 5am, but we knew Jason would be too tired to remember that. He looked at his watch quizzically, shook his head and then proceeded to get the rest of the team moving. Ah, ha…the plan worked. They were all looking rested and talking coherently, and they ate tons (well tons for an adventure racer midrace), so we were very happy. They got off in 15 minutes after waking up.

Image

Image

Image

Off they went in 12th place, with much of the competition leaving within a couple hours of them on another long mtn bike ride. We won’t see them for about 10-15 more hours. Off to TA4.

Hop on, Rabbit fans...

Well said, Silly Rabbits. Nigel will be missed.

I, and I'm sure everyone else who's been reading your reports, certainly pass on my thoughts and condolences towards the many who have been affected by this tragedy.

Silly Rabbits Race Again

Silly Rabbits Race Again

Image

Team Wellsport jokes with Silly Rabbits, showing them where they’d like them to trek on the next leg, while the teams all rest on Wednesday during the memorial bbq.

Image

Silly Rabbits was happy with their performance on the last mtn bike leg. They found a road up to one of the checkpoints that the other top teams only found on the descent. As they climbed it, Nike ACG and Seagate were coming down and gave the team a thumbs up sign for finding a faster way up. That really boosted the Rabbits spirits.

Image

Image

Team Silly Rabbits was ranked 9th for the restarted Subaru Primal Quest course on Wednesday night. This meant they were in the first wave of teams to leave ACP20 on mtn bike to a trek and the ropes section. The Rabbits were assigned to a 1:58am start time. The first place team at the restart was Nike ACG, who left at midnight. Then the rest of the top 10 left staggered at regular intervals over the next 2.5 hours. There was a break between the top 10 and the next wave of teams to account for time breaks that existed before the restart.

Image

Image

After the 6pm race meeting, Silly Rabbits got their bike gear ready, had dinner and slept for a few hours before their start time. It has been raining consistently all day, but not hard—though hard enough that our campsite and all their gear was wet again. It looked to be a chilly night so the team took a few extra clothing pieces.

Image

Image

The estimated fastest time for the next leg was given as about 20 hours. This meant it would be impossible for Silly Rabbits (and most, if any, other teams) to finish it and get on the river paddle before the dark zone of 4pm the next evening. Knowing that made the Rabbits feel a bit better b/c they were worried this next leg was going to be an all out sprint to beat the dark zone, and then another sprint on the paddle after all the top teams came together again. Only time will tell though...

Off to the ropes, the Rabbits hop.

Silly Rabbits hop on the ropes

Silly Rabbits hop on the ropes

Image

Team Silly Rabbits had moved up to 6th place on the trekking and ropes legs after the race restart.

Image

The Rabbits were fortunate to get to the ropes before any backup delayed them and then continued trekking down to the next TA in Darrington. On this trek they stayed off the high ridges as much as possible in favor of a lower, faster route. Afterwards though, they expressed some disappointment they didn't get to experience the cool ridge routes that other teams took--but were happy they kept their position in the ranks.

We had anticipated the Rabbits to hop thru transition in the afternoon, but did not see them until evening, which made for a very nervous crew watching at the corner for their Rabbits to come thru. With their dinner cold and crew sleepy, the Rabbits were finally seen trekking steadily down the street towards us--happy to see us after a tough trek. They ate well, got some medical attention for sore legs and left soon on bikes heading back towards the paddle to the San Juan Islands. The team wanted to get out of TA5 quick, pound out the bike and get to TA6 as soon as possible to get some sleep before the mass kayak start after the dark zone.

Image

Here Team Silly Rabbits signs in and reads the newspaper article on the tragic death of Nigel Aylott.

Image

Lyn banged her shin on the trek and that was hurting her in TA, but otherwise they were good to go and happy to be starting the return to the finish.

Rabbits run the river

Postby ktubbsar on Fri Sep 24, 2004 5:43 pm

Rabbits run the river

Team Silly Rabbits arrived to TA6 still in 6th place. It was an exciting night to see them so high in the standings. Instead of happy Rabbits though, we got very grumpy, hungry, tired Rabbits...such is life in the middle of an expedition length race.

Image

Image

Image

Image

They ate loads of food. We made them smoothies and tuna casserole. After they downed that they received new rules of travel for the upcoming river paddle section and checked maps with some the race organzers posted.

Image

A funny and telling story about the team (and adventure racing) was that at TA5, they requested we do whatever we could to set up a hot shower for them at the next TA. We were using a camper van that had the potential for an outdoor shower, so we got that all working, including a privacy cover and fairly warm water, soap, towels--the works, in the middle of nowhere. Then when the team came into TA6, they said a shower was the LAST thing they wanted...sheesh. They just wanted to eat and sleep. Oh well, we tried!

Image

Image

Image

After dinner, the team gave us directions for boat set up and then went fast to sleep. We set up their two boats for the early paddle. With the redesigned course and rules, Silly Rabbits would leave in wave starts every two minutes. They were to launch their kayaks in 6th place, about 20 minutes back from the leaders (due to time credits) and two minutes apart from their competition. With the dark zone, this condensed their lead from the prior day to two minutes. This final day was going to be one tough paddle race.

Off on the water...yes, there is a team in that foggy mess!

The Rabbits last transition

Postby ktubbsar on Sat Sep 25, 2004 11:20 am

The Rabbits last transition

After Team Silly Rabbits got off on the river paddle, the Bunny crew packed up Rabbit camp and headed towards the ocean for the last TA. Our guestimate on arrival times was about 8 hours, so we had a bit of extra time for our first Starbucks run in several days—made for some very happy, jumping Bunnies in the last TA!

Image

The last transition area was after the river paddle and a long portage (where teams had to wheel/carry their boats and run on roads to the kayak launch on the ocean). Several teams rollerbladed, but the Rabbits chose to run/trek with the boats on two sets of wheels. Lyn’s shin was bothering her, but she sucked it up and ran with little problem. The guys had some problems getting the boats to go straight. In hindsight, they wished they would have practiced portaging those big boats b/c after having a fairly good river paddle, 3 teams passed them on this portage.

Image

Image

At the last TA, all the top teams were very close together. It was very exciting to see their transitions. Though we had to chuckle that Nike ACG took about 20 minutes to get ready for the last leg. With surprisingly long transition times for the teams ahead of them, Silly Rabbits were right back near the teams in front of them. When they came in to TA, we told them that. They were tired from racing and just wanted to get to the finish and had a hard time believing we were telling them the truth about how close their competition was. They doubted they could catch them on this length of paddle, but we told them never to give up and got them out quickly with a 4 minutes transition—with just that, they passed 2 of the teams in transition who had passed them on the portage. The fact the other teams were in TA at the same time helped motivate the team to move faster.

Image

Image

All top 10 teams were again very close together. It was coming down to this last paddle to determine rankings. Silly Rabbits were in 8th place. It was neck and neck. A huge nail-biter for all of us crews. We would barely have enough time to catch a ferry in hopes of seeing them finish.

Image

Image

The next time we would see them would be the finish line!!

Silly Rabbits FINISH Subaru Primal Quest

Postby ktubbsar on Sat Sep 25, 2004 11:26 am

Silly Rabbits FINISH Subaru Primal Quest

On the final paddle, the Rabbits said they passed one team early on, and then soon got passed by the Swedes of Team Silva, who were very strong paddlers. Silva drafted off Silly Rabbits for a bit to conserve energy before passing, and the Rabbits were glad to return the favor as they had drafted off Silva in the first paddle leg of this race. Silly Rabbits were also happy to see Silva finish well as they felt so bad for them on the portage seeing Silva have so many problems trying to rollerblade with small portage wheels, which got flats and didn’t work well. They said at one point it was quite a spectacular sight to see 3 rollerbladers manually carry one kayak thru the portage—very tough going.

Image

The Bunny crew threw our stuff into “Vanessa”, our trusty crew van, and the RV and tried to drive to the ferry terminal. Uh, oh, Vanessa won’t start—dead battery. We didn’t have much time to fix this, so fortunately, Carl Davis, volunteer extraordinaire, came to our rescue with jumper cables and a big truck capable of jumping any rig. And in minutes we were off. With weekend traffic and all the SPQ RV’s we missed the 6pm ferry. Most of the crews for the top teams were in our position and we all got the next ferry, which was running late and left near 7:30pm. We arrived at the island at 8:30pm and had the 30 mile drive to the finish line. We didn’t know which way to get there, so we followed the other crew vehicles and pulled into the resort about 9:20pm. Someone ran up to our van and yelled, “They’re coming, the Rabbits are coming, run quick!” Eek! We jumped out of the van and ran to the finish line. We missed the team landing and breaking the tape thru the finish line, but got there with just enough time to give them wet, salty, sweaty hugs. The team thought we were there the whole time watching them finish and that was a huge boost to them. We felt bad for all the other crews with us on the ferry who missed being at the finish line for their teams.

Image

So Team Silly Rabbits has finished!!! They came in 8th place and were very happy with that. They proved you could be silly AND fast.

Image

After some finish line champagne and a change of clothes, they went for showers and a very well deserved sleep.

Image

Silly Rabbits would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all their supporters out there reading these updates and sending positive messages to the team all thru the race. The Rabbits are floored with the response to their team name and motto and are truly appreciative of all the terrific support!

Silly Rabbits are hopping on to their next adventure….

Rabbits Sort Gear

Postby ktubbsar on Fri Oct 01, 2004 5:13 pm

Rabbits Sort Gear

The Silly Rabbit Heliwell family shows how to do a proper Bunny wave. (notice the next generation Uber-Rabbits with their super strong, tall ears...watch out...GRRR!)

Image

Although Team Silly Rabbits finished Subaru Primal Quest on Friday, September 24th, the work was far from over. Now the team had the dirty job of sorting gear and cleaning dirty clothing. It’s amazing the huge amount of stuff that gets accumulated along the way and also how much gear is lost in the process. The team made a list of assorted gear lost to the racing gods this time out and taped it to the crew RV—some of it may turn up in far flung homes weeks from now, some of it has for sure been left behind at some remote trail or TA, never to be seen again.

Image

Image

After the dreaded gear sort and team debriefing, it was time to go out and celebrate…and celebrate the Silly Rabbits (and Bunnies) did! You could hear their laughter and rowdy cheers from well outside the little ‘Athlete’s Lounge’ at Rosario Resort. Many teams filtered thru and it was a fun night of swapping stories and sharing rounds of drinks. We caught Dan Barger denying he gave us the infamous “bunny wave” (two bent fingers waving) as he passed thru the bar…but we swear we saw it!! Thank you, Maria, for giving us the Bunny wave proper--we won't tell!

Image

The Rabbits hopped from the bar (ok, stumbled) to Montrail’s hot tub party--quite a wild and humorous affair. The most fun was watching the various team reactions to a few too many guys in their underwear all trying to cram into the same hot tub (if you're female, you have to love the guy to girl ratio in this sport!). We stumbled home (I mean hopped, though real close to the ground at times). One particularly drunken Bunny had to be rolled out to the patio to snore his alcohol away (identity hidden to protect the not-so-innocent).

Still more reports coming for our dedicated Rabbit fans…

Memorial Paddle for Nigel

Postby ktubbsar on Fri Oct 01, 2004 5:30 pm

Memorial Paddle for Nigel

Image

Monday, September 27th, Subaru Primal Quest held a lovely memorial paddle for Nigel Aylott. Nigel’s family flew in to paddle with Team AROC and Team Montrail—the two teams involved in the tragic accident on the course. Many of the remaining racers, crews, volunteers and staff paddled out the race kayaks to line the cove into the finish line.

Image

Image

Everyone held onto the boat next to them to form two long lines of kayaks. It was quite a site to see so many orange kayaks lined up together and then to watch the few silent kayaks of AROC and Montrail with Nigel’s family onboard rounding the corner of the bay to paddle thru our lines.

Image

Paddles of the other teams were held straight in the air to honor Nigel. As the family passed the boats, they joined in the paddle procession behind the family. Nigel’s family, AROC and Montrail landed first and walked arm and arm thru the finish line with Nigel’s ashes, which made the trip, suitably in a dry bag. The other boats landed and everyone walked with their paddles raised thru the finish chute.

Image

Image

Image

All Aussie and Kiwis present led the whole gathering in a song written especially for Nigel to the tune of “Land Down Under”. It was quite a nice, joyous tribute to a wonderful man and great racer.

Rest well, Nigel.

The Last Rabbit Silly

Postby ktubbsar on Fri Oct 01, 2004 5:43 pm

The Last Rabbit Silly

Image

Monday was the race awards ceremony and party. A good time was had by all! The Silly Rabbits took the stage for their 8th place finish and stood their long enough to show off a jersey from their supporters at Shooting Star Adventures, and the Silly Bunnies in turn hopped up on stage to collect their cherished, “Best Crew” award.

Tuesday morning saw the Silly Rabbits last day on Orcas Island. There was no time for sadness though as we had to dash for the morning ferry out. So many RV’s and vehicles were vying for the few ferry spots to the mainland and we all had such a long drive ahead of us, that we left very early to ensure a spot on this ferry. Many teams were already there, having camped out overnight in line, immediately after the party.

Image

The Rabbits were in the ferry line right behind our buddies on Team Subaru. We couldn’t resist one last chance to put the Silly Rabbits flare on yet another unsuspecting ‘victim’ so we dug out the trusty shoe polish and tip toed over to the Subaru crew van and started to write the Silly Rabbits caravan motto, “Honk if you Hump” on the back windows. Drats, someone in the van woke up and turned on the light, catching us in the act with only “Ho” written thus far. Haha, that stayed there for awhile with a few local truckers giving the van some suspicious looks! Then the team washed our bastardized slogan away...d'oh.

Image

But the Rabbits are a persistent breed, and when Team Subaru climbed upstairs on the ferry to socialize, we were able to sneak down and finish the job. Team Subaru drove away bringing the Silly Rabbits fun-loving motto to more good folks all around Seattle on their way to the airport.

Image

Off the Silly Rabbits and Bunnies hop to their respective homes and piles of laundry with great memories of a race well done.

Image

Until next time, hop on Rabbit fans...
